Teaching with Intentionality
Tutoring — any teaching for that matter — can take various forms and result in a wide range of outcomes. What sets F.E.R.G. apart from other services:
Crucially, I mentor, not just tutor. I help students find themselves to be more empowered as thinkers, students, and individuals.
My deep experience over 30+ years teaching high school students, listening to a wide range of voices, has given me helpful insight into how to craft the right question for each situation, providing challenge and support in the right mix.
My work with various institutions, including high schools, universities, publishers, and College Board (grading exams as an AP Reader, and teaching educators as an AP Consultant) gives me a broadened perspective & important insights.
I hope to help students grow in trust — to trust themselves to think on their own rather than simply mimic a previously-rehearsed script or recipe. As they trust themselves increasingly, they can become leaders, helping their peers (and everyone in their midst) flourish, too.
Ferg, engaged in some mathy play, in the role of Mathemagician at “A Day In Digitopolis,” a math festival event at Princeton University, on April 9th, 2016. (that’s right: 4/9/16, which are the squares of 2, 3, & 4…!), created by the Cotsen Children’s Library and hosted at the Chemistry building.
Services and Pricing
-
One-on-one, $150/hr. Princeton Public Library or a local coffee shop. Students are responsible for bringing course materials and any specific questions that have accumulated since our last meeting.
-
$100/hr for a pair, $80/hr for a triple, $70/hr for a group of four — We navigate the challenges of your school’s math course together, benefitting from the support, relationships, and each other’s good questions.
-
We meet for 2 hours weekly (6:30-8:30pm) at Princeton Charter School to augment the classroom work for your high school’s BC Calculus program. Prices vary depending on size; groups 5+ are $50/hr. We engage with classmates, Q&A, deeper dives into the math itself, and practice with WRITING like the AP will expect of you, right from the first week. Often, your school class may be just a packet of ‘guided’ notes, but those will take you only so far without conversation, interesting problems (created by a teacher, not just pulled from online), and your earnest reflection. And, well…we also have snacks. : )
-
For an individual educator, a team of teachers for a given course, or a full department, I tailor the PD to the needs of each group, upon consulting with supervisor, department chair, principal, or colleagues directly. Prices vary, determined by contract.
